Pirandai is a climbing creeper. It is known as Devil’s Backbone. This plant has square-shaped, sectioned branches with internodes. The leaf grows on one side of the node, while on the other side the vine grows. The formation of its flower is clustered and attached by short spikes along with the middle stem. The flowers are white, greenish, or yellowish. The berries are round, green, and turn red when ripe.
People don’t like to
cook this plant because of its cleaning process. The gel-like watery substance
in this plant irritates the skin of the hands when cleaning it. The leaves and
stems of the Pirandai are used for cooking. Usually, people make chutney and
pickles using Pirandai. The food made with Pirandai is good for bone health.
It contains triterpenoids, which have anti-inflammatory, antiviral, antimicrobial, and antitumoral properties. The Carotenoids in this plant acts as an antioxidant.
